Martial Arts For Kids

It is very important when choosing a martial arts school for your child, that the school is designed for kids classes. Keep in mind factors such as:

  • Number of kids classes offered, are they broken down by ages? The more divided the classes are, the better your child will benefit from specific instruction designed for his/her age level.
  • Are the curriculums different for each age group? Again, you want to make sure that your child is being taught what's appropriate for his/her age level. Too much information at the same time or the wrong information can lead to unnecessary pressure for your child and an ultimate dislike for the classes.
  • Number of kids attending classes, chances are that if an instructor is overwhelmed with too many kids in a class, it will be very hard for him to focus on your child's abilities.
  • How does the instructor handle a difficult situation with a child in the class? I would suggest ask him directly and see what he/she answers and if those answers convince you. The idea is to find out how the instructor deals with tough and difficult situations.
  • Has the instructor taken first aid courses? You want to make sure your child is in a safe environment where he/she will be attended if anything happens.
  • Is the school family-friendly? Many martial arts schools are geared for families. Ask the school owner if there are families that have joined the school and what discounts there are towards multiple family members. The best thing that you can do for your child is attend a class with him/her and be the role model/companion right there in the class. You don't have to attend all the classes, but some will do, especially in the early stages, plus it will be more fun learning the material together. Different schools have different styles of teaching and geared towards different audiences, choosing the right one will sometimes be a matter of trying. Martial Arts are a great way to give confidence, organization and discipline skills that a child will benefit from all throughout his adult life.
